In order to appear engaging to others, you need to make an effort to be engaged with what’s going on with them.
In other words, you need to be interested in others, if you want them to care about whatever you have to offer.
There’s that old saying about catching more flies with honey than vinegar, which means it’s easier to get what you want from others if you’re sweet to them.
It’s not meant to be manipulative, it’s just simply meant to be a reminder that:
We are a part of the world we share with everyone else.
We actually need these other people to cooperate with us in order to have a more enjoyable life experience.
And the best way to get them to want to cooperate with us, is to be as engaging as we can be, with them.
