My absolute favorite moment of the day, is when I first wake up and realize that I’m awake! It feels like a light switch is turned on, and I’m surged with electricity. The first thought that pops into my head is Thank You–for my life, and then I get so excited at the thought of having a whole new day ahead of me. It’s such a wonderful experience that sometimes I can’t wait until bedtime, so that I can fall asleep and then wake up to a whole new morning all over again!
I haven’t always been like this. I actually worked to form a habit of it, waking up and deliberately feeling excited for the new day. And I dedicated myself to practice feeling gratitude each new day until I automatically did. And yet, it’s still not guaranteed that I get to have every morning be fabulous.
When it’s not, it seems to make the rest of the day that much harder. It feels like someone hit a dimmer switch on the day, so it’s not quite as bright as I’m used to. And with this unsettling coronavirus pandemic we’re all living through, I’ve definitely had a number of these dreary type of days lately.
But that’s why I’m so grateful I have this habit to fall back on. So, I’ll put in my reps, like I’m training any muscle, and I’ll focus back on practicing gratitude for my life upon awakening, with excitement to greet a brand new day. Because nothing beats that surge of electricity from really loving the gift of life.
Hey, don’t just take my word for it, you should try it yourself. Try saying “thank you” as soon as you wake up, and then feel deliberately excited that you’re awake. What’s the worst thing that can happen with that? You’ll think you’re being silly? What then, you’ll smile and laugh at yourself for being silly? Hey, now… did you just get tricked into laughing in the morning?
Wishing much joy for you, one way or the other.
