Personal

In Don Miguel Ruiz’ classic, “The Four Agreements,” the second agreement is Don’t take anything personally.

It’s a powerful stance to take. And there’s truth to it.

We all see the world through our own individual perspective, so there’s no way to know exactly what others perceive. Just like nobody else will ever know exactly what your perception is.

So, taking anything that anyone else says or does personally is only letting yourself get hurt over something that isn’t personal.

Because they aren’t talking about you. They’re only talking about their own idea. It has nothing to do with who you are. It isn’t personal.

If you can accept this agreement, and live by it, then you’re free from unnecessary pain.

Of course, it’s much easier said than done. That’s your own personal journey.
