Plants, pets, and people all need food, water and sunlight to live and grow. If you take those things away, they whither and die.
In a similar way, thoughts need attention to live and grow.
When you take your attention away from thoughts you no longer want to think, they will whither and die. But it’s nearly impossible to just take your attention away from thoughts you don’t want to think (like I’m going to fail, go broke, get hurt, etc…).
When you say, I’m not going to think that anymore, what do you think you’re doing? You’re thinking about the exact thoughts you said you didn’t want to think about anymore, because you’re thinking about not wanting to think about them. Are you dizzy yet?
It’s a tricky situation. So how do we get out of it?
By becoming aware of those negative thoughts whenever they come up, and then replacing them with thoughts that we do want to think. Thoughts like succeeding, feeling abundant, and gratitude for the blessings we have.
The more you focus on those good-feeling, positive thoughts, and the less you think the negative, self-defeating thoughts, the quicker those negative thoughts whither off and die.
As much as you can, think positive, uplifting thoughts, and feed them lots of attention, so they grow strong and healthy.
