If saying or doing something hurtful against another feels bad to you now, just think about how much worse you may feel in the future, looking back and being powerless to stop your past self.
Have you ever recalled something nasty you may have said in the past, and cringed in horror at the thought? That awful feeling of shame is regret. Regret isn’t so easy to wipe away, but it can be avoided. You do that by being mindful of your words and actions in the present.
We don’t have to worry so much about what might happen in the future. But, on the same token, our future selves will certainly thank us for staying present and choosing to be kind, now and in the moment.
