I read this quote that says, If someone shows you their true colors, don’t try and repaint them.
This hit home for me, because I’ve made the mistake of trying to “fix” people in a misguided attempt at helping. I’ve also confused the idea of “seeing the best in everyone” to mean that I can allow myself to be abused and to overlook bad behavior.
Both approaches don’t work, and neither acknowledge the true colors that the other person is shining through.
Cyndi Lauper sings that she sees your true colors / And that’s why I love you.
The most loving thing you can do, is to love that person exactly for the colors they show you, OR to love yourself enough to walk away because you see exactly who that person is. Let those true colors shine through, and don’t try to repaint them.
