I used to think it was real clever to fake it till you make it.
But that word “fake” is jarring, and frankly it’s a bad influence on the rest of the phrase. No matter how well meaning you may be, telling yourself to fake something will leave you feeling like a fake.
Nowadays I think a much more effective phrase is to act as if. It’s a more sophisticated take on the same basic idea. Only this time, instead of faking it, you truly focus on embodying the qualities you want to become.
Acting as if you are confident, convinces your nervous system that you are confident, so then you begin to feel confident. There’s nothing fake about that.
